Slater & Parko into RD3 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells 2011

BELLS BEACH, Victoria/Australia (Friday, April 22, 2011) — Bells Beach turned on crisp three-to-five (1 -- 1.5 metre) waves in the Bowl for Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger. The second stop on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach has already bore witness to two exciting rounds of competition, the first in the Bowl and the second at nearby Winkipop, and today the world’s best surfers took to the Bells lineup to battle for points, prize money and the ever-coveted ASP World Title. Kelly Slater (USA), 39, scraped through a quiet heat against wildcard Stu Kennedy (AUS), 21. Slater only managed a heat total of 11.34 (out of a possible 20), but it was enough to progress to the next round. Bells Beach is renowned for long lulls and today it was Slater who suffered the slow heat. The 10x time world champ dodged a bullet after he left the door open for Kennedy, in their round three, match-up. In the dying minutes, of the low scoring heat, defending champion Slater gave up priority for a wave that offered no scoring potential leaving Kennedy with the final set wave. Kennedy failed to capitalize, eliminated in equal 13th. Slater admitted he was out of rhythm today. The 39 year-old added that Joel Parkinson (Aus) had to maintain his early standard for the event duration whereas he was looking forward to peaking later.
