アメリカ・テキサス州の高校で、重い病気が原因で学校に通うことができなくなった生徒のために、アメリカ初のある試みが行われています。森下知哉記者が取材しました。テキサス州ノックスシティに住む、ベティ・リンドン君(15)。腎臓に重い病気を患い、免疫力が低下し、高校生になった今、学校に通えなくなってしまった。しかし、アメリカ初のある試みが、リンドン君の生活を一変させた。テキサス州の高校で、多くの生徒に交じって、1台のロボットがすいすいと進んでいく。ロボットには、上の方に小型モニターがあり、男の子の顔が表示されている。4つのタイヤで機敏に動き、モニターにスピーカー、そして小型カメラを搭載したこのロボット。実は、インターネットを使って、リンドン君が遠隔操作をしている。リンドン君は、自宅にいながらにして「バーチャル登校」し、授業にも出席していて、友達や先生と会話を楽しめるようになった。同級生が、「科学のテストどうだった?」と聞くと、リンドン君は「結構簡単だったよね」と答えた。このロボットは、アメリカのロボット開発会社が、遠方とのコミュニケーション用に開発していたもので、1台およそ50万円。維持費は、毎月10万円ほどと高額ながら、地元の教育委員会が費用を負担することで、リンドン君の学校への復帰がかなった。リンドン君は「みんなと一緒に授業を受けられて、本当に教室にいるみたい。(ロボットの改良してほしいところは?)ロボットに、手をつけてほしい。ドアを開けたり、授業中、手を挙げられるから」と話した。先生は「生徒たちも、みんな慣れてきている。以前と何も変わってないわ」と話した。再び学校へ通う日を夢見るリンドン君。その願いがかなう日まで、ロボットで「バーチャル登校」を続けている。
