　「背筋を伸ばし、相手の目をまっすぐ見なさい」。明治初頭、初代校長のタルカット女史は、開国間もない日本の女学生に厳しく言い聞かせたという。　１８７５（明治８）年開校の神戸女学院は今月１日、１２８回目の高等学部の卒業式を迎えた。石造りの講堂にパイプオルガンの重厚な和音が広がる。１４７人の少女たちは胸を張って学舎を後にした。　中学、高校の６年間、学院生活はオルガンの音色と共にあった。毎朝の礼拝では、前奏でおしゃべりをやめて心を静め、伴奏にあわせて賛美歌を歌い、後奏で教室に送り出された。　奏者は学院ＯＧの前田直子さん（４５）。中学部に入学してすぐ、初めて聴いた音に魅せられた。家に帰ると、その日に聴いた曲をピアノで弾いた。オルガニストを夢見るようになった。
