Terminal Improvements and Honolulu International Airport

The John Rodgers Terminal has undergone a number of renovations over the past couple of years, with shops now having a mall-like appearance. Its white décor has also created it a brighter look. A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint was contructed in the center of the complex, on the site of the old Pacific Aviation Museum, which has been moved to Ford Island. The addition of this checkpoint has decreased the waiting times at peak periods. Duty Free Shoppers is the main retail concessionaire, and has created many small, specialized stores throughout the terminal and the concourses. HMS Host has the food service contract and has brought in national franchises such as Starbucks Coffee (six throughout HNL), Burger King, Cold Stone Creamery and Pizza Hut. The State has also introduced a service to help passengers with mobility problems get around the terminal and overseas concourses, using a fleet of buggies. However, these cannot be used in the inter-island terminal because the aisles are too narrow. The John Rodgers Terminal also hosts Hawaiian entertainment during peak travel periods in the morning (0800-1200) and the afternoon (1600-2000). A stage has been provided in the center of the terminal alongside the new security checkpoint. A program, founded by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, brings in professional acts that perform traditional music and hula for departing and arriving passengers. To improve first aid, 60 heart defibrillator units have been installed, with a number of staff trained in their operation. All boxes transmit their location to the security office to notify the relevant emergency medical personnel. According to the airport authorities, these units have helped to save over 20 lives since their introduction.
